Winter in Carlsbad is Tough to Take

Winter in Carlsbad is Tough to Take

BIrd of Paradise flower in our Carlsbad yard

We have our own version of winter here in Carlsbad in Southern California, and it's tough to take...note the sarcasm!

The Bird of Paradise are blooming all over, along with other flowers that keep the hummingbirds happy, and the grass and vegetation are pretty green given the rain we had in November and December (after months of no rain and the drought). The produce at the farmers' markets has been wonderful!

It's been cold at night - hitting the low 40s and even the high 30s - but warming into the 50s or even the low 60s during the day. And we can see snow on the distant mountains. It was nice to not have to turn on the heat til late November!

Those of you in the colder areas of the US are no doubt snickering when we complain about the cold here in SoCal. Or perhaps you really are jealous!! I do know what winter is like, after spending 22 years in New England and 2 years in Minnesota, but while I still miss Boston I can't say I miss the snow and cold. It was a pleasure leaving behind my snow shovel and ice scraper when we left.

I confess I may be a bit spoiled now! Know anyone who wants to escape the cold and snow and relocate to Southern California and be spoiled (except by the prices)?

Hi Jeff- have you removed your tongue from your cheek?  LOL I complained the other day when the high was in the 50s.

Ha ha ha Kathy Streib  Yep, just a wee bit sarcastic. We gripe about the cold often - having to wear socks (although I still often go barefoot, even outside) and long pants, and long sleeved shirts. Life is good here in the winter! And we love our fireplace! And of course there's the SoCal look of shorts and UGG boots.

I love bird of paradise plants too - have a great winter - and don't get too overheated

Good morning Jeff. It was with great pleasure I contacted my south Florida friends to ask how they felt about waking up to temps in the high 30's and low 40's yesterday. It wasn't much colder in Chicago. Then again, at times, I miss the warmth. Enjoy your day!

Hello Jeff - Another Carlsbad California Snowbird Alert.  The birds of paradise seem to beckon those who desire the good life.

Good morning, Jeff... when I read your title, my immediate thought was "oh sure, let's here about thos awful winters in Carlsbad." Enjoyed reading your post and not feeling sorry for you living in Carlsbad in the winter! :)

Jeff, love your photo, this plant is beautiful.  I made a dolly for my flowers, and roll them out during the day, just so I can enjoy some greenery.  Pretty cold here, but no snow right now.

That is rough my friend, I share your pain, haha.  I definitely need to plan another trip out to Cali, it's been a while.

Hi Lise Howe

I always enjoyed them in flower arrangements back in New England, so it was great fun to move here and see them all over, and have them in our yard. And the hummingbirds love them. They virtually take no care!

Hi Wayne Martin

Yep, I saw the Miami and other areas in Florida set some records. It was colder there than here, and that's unusual.

That sounds like a great idea, Joan Cox so you can enoy them. And perhaps they enjoy the sunlight, too, as long at it's not too cold.

Have a great weekend.

I KNOW you are suffering in the AZ winter!

Would love to see you - it's a great time of year to come for a visit!

Hi Jeff Dowler, CRS - I laughed when I saw the title! I always loved the southern beaches of California in the winter.  There is a lot less traffic and you can really enjoy areas such as Carlsbad.  As for the snow-shovel, we do have one, and occasionally we can use it to clear an area for walking.  But, that is really rare and most of the time it is sweater weather.

Oh, Jeff, cry me a river!!! If I didn't already live in a warm climate, I would be forced to relocate. Still, we have some heavy frosts on occasion and everything is brown until Spring.

Good morning Jeff - SOCal is the one place you can go to the beach or go to the mountains and ski on the same day.  Enjoy!

Ha ha George Souto

I was there in November of 2018, as you know from our meetup, and that was wintry enough for me. My memory is quite good for the 20+ winters I spent in Boston, and that's good enough for me.

Posted by Jeff Dowler, CRS, The Southern California Relocation Dude (eXp Realty of California) 4 months ago

Hi Sheri Sperry - MCNE®

Well I don't miss the snow shovel, but we have had several mornings it was cold enough for  thin layer of ice on the windshield of the car we park outside. Could have used that ice scraper I left in Boston!

I like that we can still enjoy the beaches in the winter. Back in New England it was a challenge, but still beautiful in its own way.

Hi Pat Starnes-Front Gate Realty

Well we get frost on rare occasions when it gets into the 30s overnight. I enjoy that it's pretty green here, with flowers all year.

It's true Grant Schneider .

And there are multiple places where we can see the mountains with the snow. If it's chilly enough we get snow in San Diego County mountains at 5000 feet. It's kinda fun to see in the distance, and to know if I want to enjoy it I can!

We've had a little cold snap in Georgia recently, but snow is a treat, not a chore in this part of the country.  I can take a few days of cold in a row when I know it will be 70 again soon.

Hi Jeff Dowler, CRS .  Something to be said about those Southern California winters.  But there is real beauty in snow and I do enjoy the seasons.  Having lived in Anaheim during my high school years (and yes - I went to the beach on New Year's Day then), I wouldn't give up my snow and ice in Central Oregon to be back in the crazy traffic. But I do miss the year round growing season.  Enjoy your winter!

Posted by Lynnea Miller, Premier Real Estate Service in Central Oregon (Bend Premier Real Estate) 4 months ago

Lynnea Miller

I get that!!

I don't like the traffic but am pretty used to it from being here 15 years and having lived in Boston for a couple decades and 5 years around Washington DC. I definitely love the year-round growing season here. And snow is not far if I get a hankering for it.

Hi Tammy Lankford,

The snow and cold would definitely be easier to take if it doesn't hang around.

Well I couldn't resist. I had to write something besides talking about the flower.

No sun here today and chilly for us - low 50s. Of course chilly for us vs. many others is vastly different.

Hope you are having a wonderful birthday, and celebrating in style.

Yes, New England can be tough. We are having a pretty mild winter so far. I hope I didn't just jinx it!

Jeff, winter in Carlsbad is like winter here in Chandler, AZ. I wouldn't change it for the world.
