Carlsbad Real Estate News and Views: Our Annual Visit to Julian CA – October 30, 2020

Here's the REAL scoop on living in Carlsbad ~ beaches, things to do, places to eat, community events, and of course neighborhoods, homes and the Carlsbad real estate market in general, including surrounding communities like Encinitas, Cardiff, San Marcos, Oceanside, Solana Beach and Del Mar.

Our Annual Visit to Julian CA – October 2020

For those of us living in Southern California along the ocean, Julian and other inland mountain communities are a world apart.

We have miles of beaches, plenty of sand and lots of palm trees – they have more pine trees, mountains, and more leaves on the trees that turn colors…and occasional snow in the winter.

We have been making day trips to Julian, about 60 miles from Carlsbad, almost every year since moving here from Boston in 2005, and occasionally more than once a year. This year we visited for a few hours on October 30th.

Main street in Julian CA

It’s a beautiful drive through the mountains, past Ramona, past the Oasis Camel Dairy, and through the small town of Santa Ysabel. You truly realize how diverse California’s topography is within just a couple of hours of the coast, and how much open space there still is.

Julian CA main street

Julian was a gold mining town in the late 1800s and there are still mines to explore, although we have yet to do so. You see all sorts of reminders of that history in the buildings, signage, and the names of places to shop, eat, and sleep.

Street signage in Julian - places to visit

Julian is a fun place to go and explore any time, although some shops and restaurants are closed in the winter. Fall is a wonderful time to visit because of the weather, apples, and lots of stuff to do and see – craft fairs, picking apples, retail sales and more.

Old buildings in Julian CA

Julian is a small town (population about 1500 per the 2010 census), and is popular as a tourist destination, thus it can get quite crowded on the weekends in the summer and especially in the fall. Parking can be a challenge…be patient…and there are often lines for the favorite places to go for apple pies (Julian Pie Company, our favorite, and Mom’s Pie House) and for the restaurants.

Having lunch at The Julian Grille has become a bit of a tradition for us and they never disappoint. It was rather different this year because of Covid (check their business hours if you plan to go for lunch or dinner), but there is plenty of seating inside the quaint 1920s bungalow (it became The Julian Grille in 1989), and out on the patio and lawn that allows you more than enough space. It was a different experience this visit, but charming as ever and good food!

Morning Jeff.

I do like apple pies, in fact, I like most things made with apples.

Hello Jeff - although I am a native Californian, I have not yet been to Julian though reports, like yours, describe it as a desired destination.  So many different choices in our state.

Good morning, Jeff Dowler, CRS Julian  reminds me of an old new england town.... I love that look....my town looked like that before it experienced a modern makeover.... I think it ruined the look!!!!

Good morning Jeff. Your photographs are very enticing. Maybe someday I will get the opportunity to see it myself. Enjoy your day!

I do a well James Dray

The Julian apple pies are wonderful - the others they make are, too. Love the pecan pie. Thankfully they are available at stores near home.

Jeff,

We both love apple pie or apple tart.  That sounds like a fun trip!  I agree with you that many do not know that CA is full of different places, different climates, etc.  We are planning to explore Cambria one of these days.  We keep hearing great stories.  Happy Sunday.  A

Hello Jeff Dowler, CRS - I have been there.  My oldest brother's first wife's parents lived there.  I enjoy visiting small towns like Julian, CA.  It is great that you make an annual day trip visit. It would never get old and such a nice getaway.

Love it Jeff!  I actually knew 2 guys that owned one of the best pie shops there.  I can't recall which one. But since you neglected to get a picture of the apple pie, obviously you need to go back and take one.

Jeff, this is the first time I have heard of Julian, CA, but it looks like a place my wife and I would enjoy visiting.

Some ladies from Julian came to see one of my listings last week- I mentioned the pies from Julian and they rolled their eyes.  Guess everyone they meet says something about the pie!  :-). Kathy

Jeff Dowler, CRS - Julian fits the description of a place where I could live comfortably. With all the cars lined up in front of the shops, it's a good clue that people come to shop which keeps the town thriving. It appears to be a quaint and quiet town, the type I prefer. When I got to Julian Grill and the Julian Gold Rush Hotel, they reminded me of Maine. Restaurants like the Julian Grill are the types I enjoyed in Maine because food was never rushed, everything on the menu was homemade, the food out of this world, and the staff treated their customers like guests and really appreciated the people, providing the best services one could imagine.

Thanks Sharon Lee Glad you enjoyed the visit.

Hi Barbara Todaro  That's the appeal for us...a good reminder of living in New England. The apple orchards are fun to visit during apple season.

Good morning Jeff Dowler, CRS, I love small towns such as Julian. Thank you for sharing some pictures from this beautiful town.

Posted by Beth Atalay, Cam Realty of Clermont FL (Cam Realty and Property Management) 17 days ago

Thanks  Beth Atalay  There is something very charming about this town, and other small towns we have seen here, but also back in New England. A refreshing change from living in a very populated area, but certainly a different lifestyle!

Hi Jeff Dowler, CRS - that is so much different than your area.  The pictures are rather diverse from a old west town to buildings and trees that would make you think you are on the east coast.

Hi Grant Schneider

That's the appeal for me...so different from the coast and it reminds me of living in New England, especially in the fall and winter.

Enjoy your weekend!
