Carlsbad Real Estate News and Views: A Favorite Christmas Ornament

Here's the REAL scoop on living in Carlsbad ~ beaches, things to do, places to eat, community events, and of course neighborhoods, homes and the Carlsbad real estate market in general, including surrounding communities like Encinitas, Cardiff, San Marcos, Oceanside, Solana Beach and Del Mar.

A Favorite Christmas Ornament

A Favorite Christmas Decoration

I don’t recall when Tumta joined us – a gift from my parents – but it was several decades ago when the kids were quite young, and rather delighted with this family pull-toy decoration (and a tradition they have carried on, thanks to us).

My Mom’s side of the family is Swedish and there are stories and legends about the mythological, and somewhat mischievous, creatures called Tomten (or Tomte) who, among other things, are known for protecting and watching over the farm and buildings, and those who live there. They tend to be associated with the Winter Soltice, and of course Christmas.

In Scandinavian folklore they are called Nisse in Norway and Denmark, and Tontuu in Finland.

We’ve called him Tumta (our variation of the name) since he joined the household years ago, and he is typically the first decoration that appears, often around Thanksgiving. He often is hung from the fireplace mantle so he’s easily seen, but more recently has been hanging around our kitchen in our window.

Our 2 daughters always ask if Tumta has appeared, and they now have their own – sadly, we were not able to find pull-toys for them like ours, despite looking in Scandinavian shops we’ve found and online.

It’s just wouldn’t be Christmas without Tumta watching over us!!

What a cute tradition, Jeff Dowler, CRS . I am 3/4 Norwegian, but cannot recall anyone ever discussing Nisse. I will have to research this a bit more and see what we have missed.

That's a cute ornament with a very large story  Christmas traditions that will be carried forward.

Hi Lynnea Miller

Well I don't know much about the folklore so had to do some research myself. We have a really cute paperback book about the Tomten that the grandkids enjoy - the illustrations are wonderful.

What a fun tradition Jeff Dowler, CRS !  I've never heard of this before.  But now I'll know a Tomten when I see one!  Love it!

Jeff Dowler, CRS, I  learned something new today.  What an interesting Swedish Tradition.  Tumta does have a few Santa like qualities.  Thanks for sharing.

Happy New Year!

Hi Jeff- Love this tradition and one that you've passed down to your daughters!!!!   It's the ornaments with the back-story like yours that mean so much.

Hi Anna Banana Kruchten CRS CRB, Phoenix Broker

I didn't know about them as a kid but am glad my kids grew up hearing some of the stories. Plus they just like the idea!

Hi Kathy Streib

It's part of our heritage and that's certainly appealing. But we have other ornaments with their own stories...and no doubt you do, and everyone else does as well.

Morning Jeff.

My wife has a box of ornaments she has been using for decades now.  They are all put away, waiting on next year.

Good morning, Jeff... what a lovely story and tradition. It should never stop. That's how I feel about my creche, which I purchased 50 years ago at a Fifth Avenue Christmas shop for $5.00. Being a graduate student I had no money to spare. It's the first thing that comes out each year in my house.... and it's wrapped up carefully at the end of each Christmas season.

Good morning Jeff. We have a snowman doll that sings jingle bells in a very loud way. No volume control. Have had it since my son was born. My grandson did not like it at first. This year it was a favorite Oh, these family traditions. Enjoy your day!

That is definitely an interesting ornament and I enjoyed learning about the history of it.  What happens when the pull is pulled though?  Did I overlook where you talked about that?

Hi Lise Howe Thanks! It's been a fun part of Christmas for year...a small thing in some ways, and yet not.

We still have to put ours away James Dray but we have a few that my wife and I each had as kids...so THAT goes back aways.
