Lake San Marcos is a residential and resort community in the southwest corner of San Marcos, bordered by Rancho Santa Fe Road to the west, large hills to the south, and San Marcos Boulevard to the north, close to the Carlsbad line.
While adjacent to a busy commercial area of San Marcos, along the boulevard, the community itself is primarily oriented toward a quiet residential and resort lifestyle.
This community is located about 8 miles inland from the ocean and perhaps 35 miles from San Diego.
Lake San Marcos is perhaps best known as a golfing resort area with 2 golf clubs (one Executive). Greens fees are very reasonable by area standards. A beautiful man-made lake (hence the name - photo at left) provides tranquil views for the residents living along its shores and up in the hills, and boating for all to enjoy. Golfing is a main recreational activity in the community, and there are many homes with golf course frontage or with terrific views of the greens and fairways.
Lake San Marcos offers a tremendous diversity of housing options, depending on your interests and pocketbook. Styles range from modern, to California-ranch style, to Spanish and Mediterranean, and other styles that, perhaps, defy simple classification.
There are condos, detached and attached homes, townhouses, and an age-restricted community (55+), and assisted living is available at Chateau Lake San Marcos.
Many homes are primary, but there are a good number that serve as investment properties and second homes. Homes up in the hills to the south are quite large, many of them gated estates on expansive lots, and there are some new homes in the extreme southwest corner. Hillside properties offer spectacular views of the lake, the golf course and the distant hills surrounding San Marcos. Many homes were built in the 70s and 80s, so many homes for sale are fixers, however newly remodeled homes come on the market fairly regularly well.
At the current time there are 30 homes for sale in Lake San Marcos (12 detached and 18 attached). These range in price from $419,400 to $850,000 for detached homes, and $150,000 (55+) to $735,000 for attached properties.
Many of the homes in the community are single story, and the area has been a popular retirement destination for years, although the demographics of the residents are changing and becoming more diverse.
As in other areas, prices have shown a healthy appreciation here, and you won't find much for under $300,000 unless you are seeking a home in the 55+ community.
Since it is a resort destination, there is a hotel on site also, a large conference center, and, of course, the golf clubs. The lake provides boating fun for residents and visitors.
The Lakeshore Hotel and Resort is located directly on the lake, affording wonderful views from the hotel rooms as well as while dining.
Services in the community include several banks, a couple of medical groups, CPAs, chiropractic care, dental, podiatry, Leann's Café for casual dining, a Community Recreation Center, the Lake San Marcos Community Association offices, hearing aid services, and AALLCare In-Home Services, with other stores and services being added.
Nearby, along San Marcos Boulevard, and to the north, you will find just about any store and service you might need, from very casual to more upscale, for indoors and out, for homes and offices, and so on.
There are lots of restaurants in the area, although these tend to be more casual rather than high end gourmet. But the nature of San Marcos itself provides for a wide range of services, shopping, and types of foods.
The San Marcos High School is also located nearby, as are schools for elementary-age and middle school children. And Carlsbad is but a few minutes away, offering a broad range of similar amenities and entertainment options.
